| Categories: IT Infrastructure, The "T" Secara umum, Infrastruktur adalah istilah yang berhubungan maknanya dengan â€struktur di bawah struktur†(â€structure beneath a structureâ€). Definisi ini mengimplikasikan adanya perbedaan layer (lapisan) dari stuktur yang ada, ibaratnya menyediakan support atau layanan (service). Lihat gambar di bawah ini.
Dalam dunia fisik, terminologi infrastruktur kadang merujuk kepada keperluan-keperluan publik, seperti air, listrik, gas, pembuangan air, dan layanan telepon. Fasilitas-fasilitas publik tersebut are more layers of total structure yang mengandung infrastruktur TI. Masing-masing layer di infrastruktur memiliki beberapa karakteristik tertentu, termasuk:
- Digunakan bersama-sama (shared) oleh pengguna yang lebih luas, ketimbang stuktur-struktur yang didukungnya.
- Lebih statis dan permanen ketimbang struktur-struktur yang didukungnya.
- Lebih dipandang sebagai sebuah service (considered a service), termasuk orang-orang dan proses yang dilibatkan dalam support, lebih dari sekedar sebuah struktur atau perlengkapan (device) fisik.
- Terkadang terhubung secara fisik ke struktur yang didukungnya.
- Terpisah (distinct) dari struktur-struktur yang didukungnya dalam hal lifecyclenya (plan, build, run, change, exit).

Gagasan atas sebuah pemisahan kepemilikan (ownership) dan lifecycle (khususnya fase design dan run) adalah mendasari konsep dari infrastruktur. Konsep ini mengkontradiksikan sebuah anggapan implisit di banyak object-oriented application development projects – dimana semua komponen reusable akan muncul dari sekelompok designer, atau semua designer itu akan menggunakan sebuah framework common semisal J2EE. Melepaskan diri dari asumsi itu, berarti Anda harus men-design with much looser coupling dalam pikiran.
Secara kontras, hal-hal tersebut di atas yang dipahami sebagai infrastruktur TI (network, server, dll), telah dipisah-pisahkan dalam hal ownership (kepemilikan) dan lifecycle, dari application development. Mengembangkan gagasan dari infrastruktur adalah satu kunci tujuan dari sebuah strategi infrastruktur yang adaptif.
